PEFC certification
Brief Explanation
Regarding the PEFC certification and its control over forest management, there are two types of
certification:The first one starts with forest certification. The second certification, called
CONTROLLED SOURCE, begins with the legality of the forest and then certifies its chain of
custody until the product is sold.
When we say it starts with the legality of the forest, we are talking about:
• The first one starts with forest certification.
• The second certification, called CONTROLLED SOURCE, begins with the legality of the forest
and then certifies its chain of custody until the product is sold.
When we say it starts with the legality of the forest, we are talking about:
Control of the government permit for the controlled pruning of the logs that will later be
transformed into charcoal.
Before being issued, the government permit will verify whether the applicant is the registered
owner of the forest. It will also check if the applicant is managing the forest with a plan. In fact, the
permit will grant authorization for the extraction of xxx m3 of firewood, which must come from
pruning and thinning. However, the government permit does not allow tree cutting; on the
contrary, it prohibits cutting down a tree. It only allows the cutting of branches due to growth,
with the purpose of letting sunlight reach the ground, thus providing nourishment for livestock. In
other words, it aims to oxygenate the forest.
The charcoal producer must declare the number of pyrolytic kilns used for charcoal production at
the government office. These kilns need to be declared and subsequently authorized for
production.
In the kiln declaration, the quantity and production capacity are described, which is an important
control bar, because if permits are granted for 300 m3 of firewood, it is known that this will be
produced in a specific number of kilns.
In parallel, another important requirement for obtaining the government permit is presenting the
CERTIFICATE OF FREEDOM OF UNIONIZATION FOR THE EMPLOYEES OF THE PRODUCER.
In this aspect, the government office protects the workers.
It is well known that charcoal is produced in areas far from the most populated centers of
Argentina, which is why labor abuse can sometimes be found.
Once the charcoal is produced, before leaving the production area for dispatch, the producer
must issue the sales invoice, the delivery note, and print the FOREST GUIDANCE issued by the
government office. Without these three documents, the charcoal cannot be transported by
truck, as it will be seized by the government in a police checkpoint.
So, to resume the explanation of the PEFC chain of custody, CarboAr starts with the government
permits. This provides us with the guarantee of legal production, thus safeguarding biodiversity,
ecosystems, and contributing to the fight against climate change, while also supporting the
development of local communities.
Due diligence is a document and the associated actions that enable agents to:
Gather information about the origin and legality of the wood or products,
Assess the risks of illegality,
Establish mechanisms to mitigate these risks.
The due diligence system must be adapted and maintained according to the agent's activities
and regulatory changes.
